Springfield, MA Cosmetic Dentist Preserves Patients’ Teeth, Eases Nighttime Tension with Dental Mouth Guard

SPRINGFIELD, MA — Have you ever been shocked by a tooth chip that you’ve never noticed before? Are you waking up with a headache or jaw pain? If so, you could be suffering from bruxism, also known as teeth grinding, while you are sleeping.

Bruxism is a common dental disorder mainly caused by stress. The damages caused by teeth grinding can lead to TMJ problems, eroded teeth, and cracked and chipped teeth as well. However, with a simple appliance, all of these problems are instantly solved and replaced with peaceful sleep and protected teeth.

“Dental mouth guards are great devices,” says Springfield, MA cosmetic dentistDr. Lisa Emirzian of EMA Dental. “We don’t exactly get second chances when it comes to adult teeth. So, preserving our natural teeth should be a top priority. But, so many people neglect the sign of bruxism since the grinding occurs overnight.”

Dental mouth guards are soft and hard oral appliances that provide a barrier between the upper and lower teeth arches. Rather than grinding, thanks to dental mouth guards people are not just sparing their teeth from harmful grinding, but the mouthpieces also promote proper jaw position and optimize breathing passages.

It is imperative for people to take care of their teeth around the clock adds Dr. Vincent Mariano, EMA Dental’s Springfield, MA dental implants expert. Whereas people are trained to brush and floss, using nighttime mouth guard is often embarrassing for people.

“People go to sleep to get rest and to relax,” says the Springfield, MA prosthodontic specialist “Often, mouth guards are thought of as clunky and uncomfortable. But, dental night guards are thin appliances custom-made for each patient. So, it isn’t only comfortable, it helps relaxation by improving jaw position.”

In addition to dental night guards, EMA Dental provides a wide range of cosmetic, restorative and general dental services for all family members. Together,Springfield, MA dentists Drs. Vincent Mariano and Lisa Emirzian provide, cleanings, whitening, veneers, bonding, dental implants, and much more. EMA Dental is also a Springfield, MA Invisalign provider.

Longmeadow Dentistry Reveals Keys to Oral Health for Seniors

LONGMEADOW, MA — Kids are always told to brush their teeth before bed. But, whether it is dentures or natural teeth, elderly members of the household should take just as much care, if not more, when it comes to oral hygiene.

Dr. Vincent Mariano, owner of Longmeadow dentistry center EMA Dental attests that there are several factors when considering senior citizens and oral hygiene. First, senior citizens experience natural changes to their teeth and gums as part of aging. Secondly, as there are side-effects to prescription drugs that can put an individual’s oral health in jeopardy.

However, diligent efforts to maintain oral health in the twilight of our lives can yield health benefits and ward off serious health problems.

“People are conditioned to brush and floss regularly from childhood, but people often don’t consider what happens when oral hygiene is neglected,” says Dr. Mariano. “But, whether it’s eating, drinking, smoking, or what have you, the mouth intercepts billions of bacteria cells in a lifetime. These foreign bodies contribute to damaging oral health as well as major health issues, so maintaining good oral hygiene is critical to oral and overall health.”

Cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, Alzheimer’s, stroke, Sjogren’s Syndrome, and other major health issues can be avoided when good oral hygiene habits are kept as a senior and throughout the course of life as stated in the Consumer Guide to dentistry.

Some conditions the elderly experience that can be symptoms of greater problems include receding gums, sensitive teeth, and dry mouth. For each of these conditions, EMA Dental’s Longmeadow dentist, Dr. Mariano, suggests preventative and corrective treatments to keep senior citizen’s in top shape and enjoying life.

Receding Gums
According to Best Dental Advice, this condition is a natural phase of life. Receding gums can contribute to tooth sensitivity as the tooth’s root becomes more exposed. Furthermore, without good hygiene habits, food particles and plaque will more easily harm a tooth’s root, which leads to tooth decay.

“Receding gums plays into one of the most essential practices of good oral hygiene,” says the Longmeadow general dentist. “Brushing at least twice per day and rinsing once is pivotal for senior citizens. There are special mouthwashes and toothpastes for patients that have sensitive teeth and receding gums, and elderly patients should consult their dentist at the first signs of receding gums to proactively adjust to this change.”

 Sensitive Teeth
Sensitive teeth goes hand-in-hand with receding gums, but can occur without receding gums being a symptom. This condition can appear as a sensitivity to hot or cold food, or pressure from biting or brushing.

The Consumer Guide to Dentistry notes that tooth sensitive derives from the erosion of tooth enamel that protects dentin, grinding teeth, consuming acidic beverages and foods, root nerve damage, teeth whiteners, and even brushing too hard.

“Sensitive teeth can be a symptom of several other conditions, or it can be a condition itself,” notes Dr. Mariano. “Because of this, patients experience tooth sensitivity should seek treatment for thorough diagnosis.”

Special toothpastes and mouthwashes counter sensitive teeth and allow patients to keep regular hygiene habits without pain.

Dry Mouth
Dry mouth is one of the conditions that elderly patients will experience not because of natural aging or hygiene neglect, but as a repercussion of prescription medication. Unfortunately, if a prescription drug results in dry mouth, elderly individuals can experience a wide range of problems.

Because saliva contains bacteria that help keep the mouth clean, breaks down particles that cause plaque, and kills off foreign bacteria, dry mouth syndrome (xerostomia) can open the gateway for infection, cavities, and other systemic illnesses.

Adding to the importance of seeking a dentist for dry mouth, according to The Consumer Guide to Dentistry this illness can also be a symptom of diabetes, stroke, or Sjogren’s Syndrome to name a few.

“You would never know that saliva was such an important part of the body until it’s gone,” says Dr. Mariano. “But, try eating a bag of salty crackers and see how the mouth feels. It’s not fun, and the body is left wide open to foreign bodies.”

There are various ways to treat dry mouth syndrome. Chewing sugar-free candy, ingesting more fluids, using artificial saliva or special mouthwashes, sprays, or even prescription medications can all keep saliva flowing in the mouth and keep the body healthy.

Cosmetic Dentistry
For seniors who aren’t concerned with their adult teeth anymore, keeping clean dentures or other prosthodontics is just as important as taking care of what mother nature gives us.

“If there is tooth decay or tooth loss, elderly patients can greatly benefit from cosmetic dental work,” says Longmeadow cosmetic dentistry specialist Dr. Lisa Emirzian. “Keeping a natural bite with dentures or dental implants keeps the facial bone structure and musculature in tact, which preserves a healthier look.”

In addition to dentures or partial bridges, porcelain veneers, dental implants, anddental crowns are all great options when looking into teeth restoratives adds theLongmeadow porcelain veneers provider.

“They may be artificial, but they can look pretty real nowadays,” says Dr. Emirzian. “Patients feel as natural as ever wearing them, and they can turn the clock back quite a few years as well.”

EMA Dental’s Pioneer Valley Dentistry Experts Celebrate Nat’l Prosthodontics Awareness Week

PIONEER VALLEY, MA — From March 7 through March 13, 2010, Dr. Vincent Mariano and Dr. Thomas Vergo of Pioneer Valley dentistry practice EMA Dental will be participating in the first annual National Prosthodontics Awareness Week. The event, hosted by the American College of Prosthodontists aims to inform the public about the importance of replacing missing teeth to maintain a healthy mouth and body.

EMA Dental will be participating in Prosthodontics Awareness Week by hosting an open house for the community to learn more about prosthodontics and the benefits of treatment.

“To be a part of the first awareness event for prosthodontics is very exciting for me as a professional,” said Dr. Mariano, a Pioneer Valley dental implantsspecialist. “The prosthodontics field is my passion, and I invite anyone who can benefit from this life-altering treatment to come visit me during this event to learn about treatment that can change lives.”

Prosthodontics includes treatments such as single and multiple tooth dental implants, bridges, and partial and full dentures. In order to be recognized as a prosthodontic specialist by the American Dental Association, dental practitioners need at least two to three years of extra dental school in the field of prevention and treatment of tooth loss.

Tooth loss can occur from tooth decay, gum disease, injuries, cancer, or even wear and tear comments Pioneer Valley dentist Dr. Vergo. Untreated tooth loss typically results in the deformation of the facial muscles and bone shrinkage in the jaw.“Not only do people need to recognize that tooth loss is a sign of serious health complications, but tooth loss will also deteriorate confidence,” said Pioneer Valley prosthodonticst Dr. Mariano. “However, we have excellent care available for virtually all treatment scenarios. That’s what this event is all about. Making people aware of the risks and that help is available.”

Dr. Mariano is the only Board Certified Prosthodontist in the Pioneer Valley region. In addition to prosthodontics, EMA Dental is a family dentistry center providinggeneral dentistry services such as cleanings, fillings, and other services as well ascosmetic dentistry services. East Longmeadow/Northampton Dentist Discusses Invisible Orthodontic

NORTHAMPTON, MA — Some people are too embarrassed to undergo orthodontic treatment out of fear and anxiety. Children and teens fear teasing, while adults grow anxious about public perception and gawking stares from colleagues and peers.  But, with the advent of invisible Invisalign orthodontics people don’t have to fear orthodontics anymore says Northampton dentist Dr. Lisa Emirzian of EMA Dental.

In just the last ten years, orthodontics has changed drastically. No longer are patients forced to expose their braces to the public while smiling or talking. Rather, this technology conceals treatment so that patients can live their lives worry-free of public scrutiny. If a patient is looking to improve his or her appearance by correcting tooth misalignments, the last thing he or she wants to do is wear braces that attract attention to their less-than-perfect smiles says Dr. Emirzian.

“Recognizing the need for subtler technology, the dental community has responded with invisible braces which conceal brackets, and Invisalign treatment which renders treatment virtually unnoticeable,” adds Dr. Emirzian.
Though traditional braces, Invisalign, and other orthodontic methods allcorrect teeth misalignments, they differ in appearance and implementation, providing various options for each patient’s needs.
“One of my favorite experiences is when a patient completes his or her treatment,” says Dr. Emirzian. “The patient is absolutely beaming with pride and joy that they have this new, beautiful look. It’s rewarding to be a part of their self-improvement, and I’m always happy to help.”

Invisalign

For patients who have no patience for metal brackets, Invisalign treatment avoids metal brackets and wires altogether. Invisalign.com notes that Invisalign treatment utilizes clear, plastic tray ‘aligners’ that fasten directly over a patient’s teeth.
The aligners are special made for each patient by Invisalign, and gradually shift teeth into an aesthetically correct position over the course of treatment. Every two weeks, patients visit their dentist for a quick checkup and for their new aligner trays.
“Because Invisalign trays are removable, patients are responsible for keeping the aligners in place at least 22 hours per day,” says Northampton Invisalign dentist Dr. Emirzian. “The only occasion deemed acceptable to remove the aligners is for meals. But, since they are virtually invisible, leaving them in isn’t much of a burden to patients.”
Getting started with Invisalign begins with a consultation with a certified dentist or orthodontist. After the evaluation, a dental impression of the patient’s teeth is taken. These impressions are sent to Invisalign, where the complete set of tray aligners is manufactured for the course of treatment. On the next appointment, the patient receives his or her first trays, and treatment begins.
Average costs for Invisalign are around $5000, with treatment typically taking 12 to 15 months. After treatment is completed, patients are required to wear a retainer to preserve the patient’s new smile.
Invisalign ranks dentists and orthodontists in Invisalign expertise based upon case experience. Dr. Lisa Emirzian is listed on Invisalign’s Web site as a Preferred Provider. This status means that Dr. Emirzian has achieved “Preferred Provider” status, meaning that she has all of the current training and experience to provide Invisalign consultations and treatment. For more information on providers, visitwww.invisalign.com.

Conditions

Because Invisalign fastens over a patient’s teeth, patients with severely misaligned teeth or missing teeth are not candidates for Invisalign treatment. However, these patients can be treated with traditional braces to correct their misalignments.
In most cases, child patients should be treated with traditional braces, as baby teeth make Invisalign treatment more difficult. Also, for young patients, Invisalign’s clear, removable aligners pose a danger as they can be easily lost. Also, the aligners are made of plastic, which can be easily cracked or chipped.

“People curious about Invisalign treatment should start with questions with their dentist,” says Dr. Emirzian, a Northampton general dentist focusing on esthetic and smile enhancement. “There are several qualifying factors for treatments that need to be identified before treatment begins. But there are more treatments out there than ever, and most patients enter treatment with great optimism and anticipation for a renewed, gorgeous smile.”

As President of the Tufts Prosthodontic Alumnae Organization, Dr. Mariano will deliver a welcoming speech to the doctors, professors, and other members of the dental community present at the gathering. Northampton, MA – The Northampton dentists Drs. Emirzian and Mariano of EMA Dental Northampton proudly announce the grand re-opening of their 64 Gothic Street location on May 17th.  “This re-opening follows months of thoughtful renovation to equip the office with a state-of-the-art in-house dental laboratory, additional patient treatment rooms and more comfortable patient centered areas,” said Dr. Lisa Emirzian, a Northampton Invisalign provider of dental crowns.

EMA Dental Northampton will continue to serve Dr. Parisien’s longtime patients at the Gothic Street office and will welcome patients who were previously seen at their 12 Center Street location, just one block over. Northampton dentists Drs. Emirzian, Mariano, Cohen and Osofsky  – along with the entire EMA Dental team – are looking forward to welcoming each and every patient.

In addition to the interior upgrades, Center Street patients will enjoy off-street parking – a welcome change from searching for meters or public parking lots. “EMA Dental Northampton looks forward to continuing their tradition of providing personalized, high-quality care,” said Northampton general dentistry practitioner Dr. Mariano. “We believe that this move will enable us to serve our patients even better into the future.”
